Boy do we miss going to the movies.
Late last year, Leah and I discovered $5 movie night at the movie theater closest to her house on Tuesday nights. Every week (pre-COVID), I would drive from Kansas City to Omaha from Tuesday-Thursday to work with Leah. This was perfect.
I looked up movie times before heading on I-29 one Tuesday and immediately got excited when I saw the new Little Women was playing at just the right time that evening. Knowing this flick wasn’t exactly on the top of Kevin’s must-see movie list, I was thrilled to ask Leah to watch it with me. This kind of film was for sure our cup of tea.
We arrived at the theater just in time — with chocolate chip cookies hiding in our purses, of course. We were ready for some high quality entertainment.
I hadn’t seen Little Women in a while and had forgotten a bit what it all entailed. The tight-knit sister storyline felt all so familiar. Then it hit me: Jo, the main character, is an aspiring writer who ends up publishing the story of her sisters. This struck home. I felt at home. My heart swelled as I peaked over at my sis. What a lovely Tuesday.
The most special moment occurred during the emotional part of the movie. Holding back my waterworks, my instinct was to hide my internal struggle. At the exact time I grabbed for my drink to distract myself, Leah grabbed for her drink, choking back her own tears.
At that moment, our response was exactly the same. Connected. Sisters. The same. It was such a human reaction. It reminded me that we actually have more in common than we have different.
Let’s keep that in mind this week as we encounter both new and familiar faces. We are all more the same than we realize.
Here’s to turning our minds Upside Down.
